Event: Irising Up Kinder Scout, on 1 June 2019
Celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2019 with us by taking action to create a world where no girl is held back by their period. Just £5 enables us to support a girl to be comfortable and confident during her period.

Story

Two years ago I climbed up Kinder Scout to celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2017 and raise funds to support Irise's work to create world where no girl is held back by her period.

This year I'm doing it again with a team of wonderful supporters who are passionate about ending period poverty in the UK and Uganda.

We're super excited that the hike will be filmed by Maide Productions, a female led production company, who are making a feature length documentary about those at the forefront of the fight against period poverty.

Girls around the world experience shame and embarrassment when they start their period and struggle to access the support and information they need to be confident and comfortable during menstruation.

In Uganda over half of girls are using improvised materials ranging from rags to corn husks and banana leaves to manage menstruation and missing school during their periods.

In the UK 1 in 10 girls in the UK have been unable to afford pads and receive no preparation at all before their first period.

"The shame of blood leaking through your skirt, boys calling you names, sores and infections makes you hate being a healthy young woman" Ugandan young woman to Irise

"I went on the internet to learn more about my period when I was nine because I didnt know what it was. I used a help line to find out and they were rubbish!" British schoolgirl to Irise

Every £5 I raise will enable another girl to stay happy and healthy during her period.

"Now I can do anything...even jumping, playing and sitting in class."
