Story
Secondary breast cancer is breast cancer which has spread from the breast to other parts of the body. Although secondary breast cancer can be treated, there is no cure. Unlike those living with primary breast cancer, there is no end of treatment, there is no remission. It’s estimated that 35,000 people are currently living with secondary breast cancer in the UK yet only 7% of the National funding for cancer goes towards this incurable disease. Make 2nds Count aim to address this imbalance. Please give generously!
If the last year & me being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer (also known as secondary or advanced) has taught us anything, it’s to appreciate life as fully as possible. Some days that’s the small things, but we wanted to do something big too. And an ultramarathon certainly ticks that box!
We will be completing Race to the Stones as an 100km hike over 2 days. We had originally looked at doing this race as a trail run a few years back but running is now something I’ve given up due to having cancer spread to most of my bones & spine. My latest scans are still stable though & whilst running might be out, I’m determined to make the most of my treatment working well by pushing myself & raising money for a wonderful charity.
This will be a huge challenge for me as fatigue is the main issue I face from my current treatment. With Tom by my side though I feel I can do anything & we’ve tested the waters with a few long hikes so far. Training will continue over the next few months to get me fit enough for Race to the Stones at the beginning of July.
Make 2nds Count is one of the only charities that specifically funds secondary cancer research. Research that gives me hope. Hope for as many treatment options as possible that will ultimately buy me more time with my boys. Please give generously, they do such great & important work.
