Story

Over the last few years we have managed to raise more than £5,000 for charity as a result of various challenges including a cycling event, kayaking, marathon running and mountaineering efforts, all with the support of our business associates and friends.

We would dearly love to improve on that amount again this year, with this year's chosen charity being Medical Detection Dogs.

On 15 August 2015, Feilden+Mawson will have a team of trekkers taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.  This challenge takes on Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, covering a distance of approximately 26 miles in under 12 hours, walking from peak to peak.  These peaks form part of the Pennine Range in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Our chosen charity is Medical Detection Dogs. This charity is very close to our hearts as a member of our staff has a 7 year old daughter with Type 1 Diabetes, an auto immune disease, which she has had for over five years and has been very difficult to control.  Due to the difficult nature of her particular Type 1, the family were gifted a very special dog, Wendy.  Wendy is a highly trained dog and, through her very sensitive sense of smell, alerts the family before their daughter’s blood sugar levels become dangerously low and high, day and night. This enables them to treat her condition with glucose if she has a low blood sugar level, or with insulin if its high, keeping her safer.  It has made a huge difference to the whole family.

The charity has two arms:

-           Medical alert detection dogs
-           Cancer detection dogs

The medical assistance dogs are trained to assist individuals who manage complex medical conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, on a day to day basis.  The dogs are taught to identify the odour changes that are associated with certain medical events.

Cancer cells release small amounts of volatile substances.  The cancer detection dogs are trained to detect these substances, and they hope this work and research will enable scientist to develop an early cancer screening system.
