Story
Arctic Rugby Challenge - Fergus Davidson has come together with Children's rugby charity Wooden Spoon and world class maritime and polar adventurer, Jock Wishart on a pioneering expedition to the Magnetic North Pole. The intrepid adventurers include former rugby union internationals Tim Stimpson (England & British Lions) and Ollie Phillips (England 7s).
In April 2015, a World Cup year, a small group of us, including Jock, Tim and Ollie, will set out from Resolute Bay and trek 100 miles to the 1996 Magnetic North Pole, where we will attempt to set a world record by playing the most northerly game of rugby in history. As an expedition challenger, I will be enduring extreme physical and mental fatigue, and surviving in temperatures as low as -50C with wind chill. There may also be a few polar bear encounters...
This is all, of course, in aid of a fantastic cause: each of the us is attempting to raise £50k for Wooden Spoon, who support mentally and physically disabled children through both capital based and community projects. Through the scale of the challenge and the coverage we hope to receive, we are also very excited by the prospect of raising the charity's profile throughout the UK, reaching members of the wider rugby community and beyond who know very little of Spoon and the work that the charity does.
