I completed the challenge of this 400km bike ride on Monday August 14th when I arrived in Aachen in Germany for the final leg of the trip on the fifth day after leaving Leeds Civic Hall.  The 32km ride from the historic Dutch town of Maastricht took less than two hours in spite of the relatively hilly terrain. Most of my ride was through Belgium and much of it was along the extraordinarily huge canals with long straight flat towpaths which made the going quite smooth and easy.  However, on the day I was due to arrive in Maastricht, I encountered a six-inch mud puddle along the canal route which left my bike completely seized up with the thick clay-like liquid mud which then dried into all the mechanisms and had to be washed out carefully when I reached Maastricht.  That slowed me down a little but was the only incident over the five days of the ride.

I want to thank all of you again for your generous donations to this great cause. The Funzi and Bodo Trust will now be able to start work on the chicken farm which will provide eggs – much- needed nourishment for the children of the two villages isolated on the edge of the southern Kenyan coast. The money we have raised together will improve the lives of some of the poorest people in the world and I will soon be receiving an update from the charity's founders, Ashley and Sara Peatfield.  It's still not too late to donate money, however – just use this site to give whatever you can, every penny counts.
