As anyone who knows me will attest.... long distance running is not my natural territory. However having threatened the 'intelligent scales' in our bathroom (which did lack the IQ to shout 'GEROFF') with a visit post Christmas it was clear something had to be done! The marathon has proved a good catalyst for me at a personal level to gaining some control over my fitness.

The much more important reason for taking part is to raise money to support the vital work which is done by Baby Lifeline in the provision of equipment and training to healthcare professionals in Britain and around the world to help ensure a higher survival rate for premature babies and babies born with immediate serious difficulties. The charity not only provides vital support at the very front line of services but also supports mothers and families beyond the first stages of birth. The Charity was founded 35 years ago by Judy Ledger. Judy still has a very active role in the management of the charity and her daugher, Sara, is also now working full time for the charity.  Baby Lifeline only has three staff and a very light touch administrative strucutre so the vast majority of the funding raised goes directly to where it is needed. When Tim Ledger mentioned to me that he was looking for runners as the Charity had taken some slots at the London Marathon I said.... "come on Tim that could be me and you..." and the rest, as they say, is history!

All of us can appreciate the stress and worry which comes with a 'standard' pregnancy. The educational and support work which is done by Baby Lifeline together with the physical equipment which they acquire for maternity and neo-natal suites helps to alleviate the problems faced by hundereds of families who find themselves in the position of having a non-standard pregnancy or premature birth.
