It’s official, I’m bonkers. Once again me and my wheelchair are taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday 13th September, possibly for the last time. This will be the third and probably last time I will take to the streets of Newcastle with a fantastic team of pushers, Dr. Chris Deighton, Professor David Scott, Dr. Catherine Swales, Donna and Dean. The last 12 months have been a real struggle for me as various treatment options to control my joints and my uveitis have failed. At the moment it is large doses of steroids which are dampening down the inflammation and I’m not sure whether the next and my final biologic option will work either, so I am keeping fingers and toes crossed that it will because I really want to do the GNR this year. I’ve just become a Grandma, so I’m relying on my younger and fitter team of fantastic pushers to get us through this huge challenge for us and one which I hope I will be able to achieve without too much pain! I suspect that also goes for the pushers!
I have suffered with severe RA since about 30. Shortly after my daughter was born RA hit me hard and I have been fighting it ever since. My daughter grew up helping me with everyday tasks, constantly coping with a mother in extreme pain. I launched the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) in 2001 to help people like me in the UK. Chris and David, both NRAS Medical Advisors, have been a constant support to NRAS and to me personally and we launched our new Children’s Service for families and young people last year.
Please give generously to the only national specialist charity focusing
on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, both
life changing diseases. By taking part in this event we also hope to
raise awareness of RA and JIA in the UK and the services NRAS provides
for people who suffer from these dreadfully painful diseases that affect
both children and adults. Both these diseases lack public understanding
and visibility and by taking part in a major national run like the GNR,
we have the opportunity to raise much needed public awareness as well
as funds!
Please dig deep and donate generously to this cause that me, my team and all our supporters are so passionate about.
A heart felt thank you from us all.
