We enable people with disabilities to achieve their full potential

Story

The Calvert Trust aims to allow disabled people to fulfill their full potential. What a wonderful aim - made even more wonderful in the way that they set about achieving this. Calvert has 3 centres and the one I know best is just outside Keswick in the Lakes. I have often seen folk riding in areas inaccessible to wheelchairs, hurtling round in canoes, abseiling down cliffs, or just enjoying a view they would never have imagined they could have seen. Whatever they are doing whether they are 7 or 70 , whatever their disability, they are all united by their laughter and  excitement. I love the Lakes. For me it's a profoundly spiritual place that exerts an extraordinary power of fulfillment and contentment. The way that Calvert uses this power is sheer magic!. This is a small charity - so a little goes a long way. Please help me to make my leaving Scottish Government bring something to others not just myself.

With thanks

GIll

About the charity

The Lake District Calvert Trust provides residential outdoor activity courses for people of all ages with physical, sensory, learning, behavioural and/or mental disabilities. Its mission is to challenge disability through outdoor adventure. Pioneering equipment adaptations, and intensive, instructor-led activity programmes (that include climbing, abseiling, canoeing, sailing, horse/trap driving, archery, orienteering and paragliding), provide an environment whose aims are to teach, challenge, motivate, engender confidence in ability, promote independence, and foster integration. All instructors are highly trained and specialist qualified, and the facilities are specially adapted and fully accessible to all. The Lake District Calvert Trust provides a unique and life-changing experience for those with disabilities, who are encouraged to believe that it’s what you CAN do that counts.
