Sophie's Story... Before we start, do you know about secondary breast cancer? Secondary breast cancer is breast cancer which has spread from the breast to other parts of the body. Although secondary breast cancer can be treated, there is no cure. Unlike those living with primary breast cancer, there is no end of treatment, there is no remission. It’s estimated that 35,000 people are currently living with secondary breast cancer. It is the main cause of all breast cancer-related deaths. Sophie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. After months of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, a double mastectomy and losing her hair she finally got to ring the bell. Sophie was in remission and would be for 5 years. It was an incredible moment and one which she fully deserved after the incredible fight she put up! She was an inspiration to those around her, not least her closest family and friends! Two years later after a pain in her hip not going away unaware of the possibility of secondary breast cancer Sophie and her family were hit with devastating news. Secondary breast cancer which had spread in her bones. Sophie was the strongest person. She was so powerful. Even with this news, she'd always said: "I've got this!". That is strength! Sophie's strength empowered her family and friends as she now attempted to fight secondary breast cancer. With little knowledge and a step into the unknown Sophie not only fought this disease with incredible might but supported her family and friends along the way. After battling for just over a year and her body not responding to treatment Sophie sadly passed away Sophie was an inspiration to so many of us and her strength now lives on in us. Now we want to use that strength to make a difference. Here's what we're doing... We've come together as one to create a team that's going to compete in the Man vs Lakes Ultra Marathon Event. We aim to raise money to increase the awareness of secondary breast cancer and to fund secondary breast cancer research. We will all be pushing our body to the extreme for a great cause.
