Story
Please support our raising awareness! A group of Students from the Human Communications Society in Sheffield are raising funds for Swallowing Awareness Day 2019 by embarking on a 5 day Pureed food diet.
A person with swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia) may cough or choke while attempting to swallow saliva, liquids, or food. This could be an effect of a variety of Neurological conditions for example, Parkinson's, A stroke survivor, multiple sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease etc.
As aspiring Speech and Language Therapists that would be assessing someones swallowing ability this is an important cause for us.
A group of us will be challenging ourselves to eat a similar diet to Someone with Swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia). We will need to have a specialised diet to aid their swallowing, as if left untreated food or liquid could be aspirated in to the lungs and ultimately have life threatening consequences.
Some things we will be trying out are thickening our drinks, altering the texture of our food to make it easier to digest and more. Following the IDDSI guidelines.
