My lovely son Luke died in Willow Wood hospice on 7th May this year. He was a few days away from his 39th birthday. Luke was diagnosed HIV positive when he was 22. His health gradually deteriorated over the years but he remained positive and uncomplaining, always ready to help others.
When Lukes health took a turn for the worse in April this year we managed to get a referral to Wllow Wood. We arrived , desperate and scared, at the end of our tether and there nestled at the end of a quiet cul de sac was our haven... there they all were, the nurses, doctors, volunteers, support workers, cooks, cleaners gardeners and many more. They scooped us up and wrapped us in love and compassion, provided excellent care ...24 hours a day right up until Luke's peaceful end with his family by his side. I can never thank Willow Wood enough for giving us the chance to spend these last precious days with Luke in such a warm loving atmosphere where nothing was too much trouble.
Anyone who has lost a loved one will understand the pain of grief and certainly there have been some dark days for all of us who knew Luke since he passed away. I had to find something to do that would help me heal and more importantly help others with life threatening illnesses. So, I decided to test out my new hip replacement ( yes I am now officially bionic!) and walk the 100 mile South Downs way and collect as many pennies as I can for Willow wood in the processI have set myself a target of £3800 which is £100 for every year of his life. I know its is a lot of money for a middle aged woman with a false hip and rucksack on back doing a Joyce Grenfell impression... Have already lost a couple of toenails in training and am currently testing out different walking socks and blister plasters. But come September I shall be there...a solitary figure plodding her way along the coast from Eastbourne to Winchester. If anyone fancies strolling alongside me for a while you would be most welcome.
I shall be posting up the route and stop over locatons a bit nearer the time.
