Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Five years ago my Nanna was diagnosed with a strand ofAlzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. For the first year she tried so hardto cover it up and carry on her day to day normal life. But as the years wenton it became clear that my wonderful Nanna was slowly losing everything sheonce was.

Everything she accumulated in life, everything she worked so hard forwas slowly being taken away from her. This was devastating to her and for allthe people around her who cared for her and loved her so much. As you canimagine, or as you know, this was and still is hell. But it gets worse. Who cantake her seriously when she is so far from who she once was? Her strangebehaviour and fumbled sentences change others perception of her and herperception of herself. She has become incapable.

But this is not who she is andwho the people are who suffer from this terrible disease. This is their diseaseand like any disease it has a cause, it has a progression and it could have acure. Mygreatest wish is that my children, our children, the next generation, do nothave to face what my Grandma is facing and with my help we can fight thisdisease. Looking at the wider picture of the disease I now understand we arefacing one of the biggest problems of humanity. There are 850,000 people with Alzheimer's in the UK, with numbers set to rise over 1 million by 2025. This willsoar to 2 million by 2051. After researching this further I have found thatdementia research is desperately underfunded. By fundraising and workingtogether I am hoping to make a difference to this research and help towards thefight against this disease.

For the time being my Nanna is alive, we know she is alive. She has people that love her dearly and for parts of the day she still has moments of pure happiness andjoy. I know that if my Nanna could understand what I was doing she would beproud of me – just like she always was. So here is my plea to you; please donate, not only for my Grandma but for the thousands ofpeople who struggle with this disease each year. Struggle to be a part ofthings and to stay connected to whom they once were. My promise is to trainhard, work hard, fundraise harder and be the best I can be.
