We care for the homeless of London to improve their lives and offer hope

Story

Basically, in a nut shell, I'm pretty pissed off with the commercialisation of Christmas, from the TV ads that begin in September to this new shameful 'Black Friday' that turns human beings into panic-buying-discount-clawing monsters.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy choosing a nice gift for my parents and brother, brother-in-law and beloved sisters, and my wider family that includes the boyfriend & his family, and my best girlfriends - and there is great enjoyment watching someone's face when they open a gift you really know they'll love. I love that.

But I have to say that, for whatever reason I cant put my finger on it, this year feels different.

During a conversation with my boyfriend about 'whose getting who what' and 'would I like it if so-and-so got me this-that-and-the-other', it dawned on me that, honestly, there isn't anything I really need for Christmas, and it would be awkward to receive present that I a) don't need b) will never use or c) can eat.

Some of you may think I am beginning to sound ungrateful - of course, I will absolutely appreciate any gift I receive. Actually, the fact that someone thought to pop my name down on their Xmas gifts list makes me feel appreciative :) they say its the thought that counts and for me, that couldn't be truer!

So, what I'm really trying to say here is THANK YOU for thinking of me when you put my name down on your list of people to buy for, or list of Christmas cards to post this year. I've thought about it, and there is something I'd love for Christmas - besides your company and a drink together down the pub! - and that is, a donation to the WhiteChapel Mission.

You may already be aware that I recently volunteered at the East London based homeless shelter. It really did open my eyes to the poverty that still exists right here in the UK - on our doorsteps. Its a heart-breaking and humbling experience and, to be honest, I want to keep helping them. Especially during this period which should be filled with celebrations and love and fun, but instead is a painful reminder of the things they have lost and the desperation to be helped.

A breakfast at the shelter costs just £1.50, and I'd really like to be able to give London's homeless a good few more hot breakfasts, as that's the very least we could do, whilst we tuck into our own Christmas dinners.

Thanks everyone for reading, and for donating.
