Story
Demetri is the daughter of Shanna Richards who lives in the Caribbean. On November 4th, 2017, Demetri started to vomit constantly. She was admitted into hospital. The following morning, she started to have seizures and was unresponsive. She was then admitted into the intensive care unit where she spent a further 12 days.
She was diagnosed with hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain) and needed emergency surgery to implant an External Ventricular Drain(EVD) to help ease the pressure build up in her brain. Demetri was on life support and her mother was told she might not survive.
Demetri was re-admitted to the ward and then developed a blood infection. The doctors carried out surgery to implant a VP shunt (ventriculoperitoneal), a device that relieves the pressure on the brain caused by fluid accumulation. However, this had to be removed as it became infected. The doctors also found out that she had meningitis. Demetri stayed in hospital till the 25th of January 2018. She is now recovering at home but cannot do things like a normal able-bodied child.
Demetri needs a special type of walker which will give her support and help her regain strength and with additional therapy will help her stand again. The walker costs $1000. This walker will give her support and will help her to regain her strength and further therapy will help her stand again.
Her mother has mentioned
‘I just like to say in advance that my daughter has been through a lot and I will not give up on her. I am willing to fight at every chance I get. If there is a will, there is a way’
Help us raise £1000 and help Demetri regain her strength.
