One of our Fair Trade suppliers, Tilnar Arts has organised a cycle challenge event, which prompted us to think about doing the same thing. Like most people recently we've been touched by the appalling tragedy in Nepal, particularly as some of our Fair Trade suppliers are in Nepal and had decided to do something to help.
Then, whilst at the recent BAFTS (British Association of Fair Trade Shops) conference we were very impressed by a speaker from the Esther Benjamin Trust. They work to combat trafficking of children in Nepal and because they are a small charity they are concerned with how children are rehabilitated into a situation where they are not likely to be vulnerable to trafficking again and also they work to have traffickers prosecuted. They are also at present working to help children who are especially vulnerable having been made homeless or orphaned by the recent earthquakes, to relieve the desperate situation and ensure that they are not open to being trafficked.
Again we were very touched by their stories and felt that supporting a small charity where the funds are easily traceable is in keeping with the ethos of Fair Trade where we try to support small businesses.
