At the end of May this year, we set out from Saltaire and walked the 90 mile Dales High Way to Appleby to raise money for Diabetes UK, a charity very close to our hearts.

The guidebook described the walk as 'challenging' and thanks to the very strong winds, horizontal rain and hail, it certainly was at times!

Despite these challenges, it was a great walk, we saw some amazing countryside, met some lovely people and we are both delighted to have completed the 90 miles with only a few blisters.

A special thanks goes to Addenbrooke's Hospital diabetes care team, without whose support it would have been even more of a challenge.

Despite what the media may lead you to believe, slim and fit people develop diabetes and the number of children under 5 being diagnosed is increasing significantly.

Complications of diabetes include heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and amputation. Diabetes is the biggest cause of blindness in the working population.

Diabetes UK is the largest organisation in the UK working for people with diabetes, funding research, campaigning and helping people live with the condition.
