We rescue and rehabilitate furry-friends to find them paw-some forever homes

Story

When you dedicate your life to dog rescue, there is very
little that shocks or surprises you. Over the years, you develop a protective
shield for your emotions, it’s the only way you can continue to do what you do.

Sometimes, that protective shield takes a battering. A dog
comes in who shatters your heart. This is one such dog.

A member of public took her into a vets, claiming they had
just witnessed her being involved in a road traffic accident. She was covered
in fresh blood and the vet’s priority was to check her over and give her the
treatment she would need. As is protocol, they asked the person bringing her in,
for his details. He agreed, but said he needed to reach something out of his
car first. He left and never came back. It may be that he just didn’t really
want to, it may be that something happened, and he needed to leave.

On examination, this girl is thought to be approximately 4
years old. She has obviously had at least one litter of pups. She is not micro-chipped,
and had no identifying tags on.

Clearing the blood from the wound on her side, the veterinary
staff were shocked by what they found. Rather than the expected ragged skin,
gravel rash, tyre damage, bruising etc of an RTA, they found a clean, straight
cut. This kind of wound is more indicative of an injury caused by a blade of
some sort, rather than an RTA.

They administered the necessary treatment, and then
contacted our rescue.

On meeting her, our volunteers were devastated. They found a
dog very obviously in pain, yet she still moved towards them and sought
affection. Her eyes reflected the physical pain, the emotional hurt, fear, and
confusion, and yet she still looked towards our volunteers with hope. She
flinched as a hand reached out to comfort her, and yet she still accepted that
hand humbly.

We can’t say for sure what has happened to this girl. Maybe it
was some kind of freak car accident. All we can do, is take the vet’s description
of her wound, and the behaviours that our volunteers saw her display, and we
can hazard a good guess at what she’s been through.

For this girl, pain and fear ends here. Whether it was a
bizarre RTA, or an intentionally inflicted knife wound, that is all behind her
now. She is safe. She will continue to receive the medical care she needs, and
she will be supported emotionally too as she recovers.

Please welcome Maggie to the Pebbles family. She is in a
foster home whilst she continues her medical treatment, and while she recovers
emotionally. An initial assessment shows her to be hand shy……she cowers. She is
very scared of fast and sudden movements, unsure of a collar and lead (although
once on, she walks beautifully) and it appears she is profoundly deaf.

We will update with her progress, and when she is ready to
look for a new home.

To help us continue helping dogs, like Maggie, please
considering donating to our kennel and vet fees.
