My story

This is an excerpt from my letter to Jimmy’s:
My name is Jessie Godsal, I am 9 years old and I live near Cambridge .  I feel that I am more than lucky to have all the things I have in my life  like a home, clean clothes, my dog, a family that loves and cares for me, school for my education and making friends. I love going into Cambridge but I feel sad when I see homeless people, it seems so unfair and I am worried that they are unhappy and cold and hungry and wish I could do something to help.

I have been thinking about how I would like to help for a long time so I have decided to do some fundraising by walking up the UKs 3 highest mountains, Snowdon, Scarfeld Pike and Ben Nevis. I will climb these mountains over a few separate weekends this Spring.

I was wondering if I could arrange a short 10 minute meeting to come to see you and ask you some questions about the work Jimmys does so I can help people understand why your work is so important.

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your time.

From Jessie Godsal

My interview at Jimmy’s:

Q: Approximately how many homeless people are there in Cambridge?
A: There are approximately 60 people sleeping on the streets at any one time but many many more who are less visible because the sleep on sofas and floors of friends.

Q: What is the main cause of people becoming homeless?
A: The main cause of people becoming homeless is due to family breakdown.

Q: What is the best thing someone can do for a homeless person on the street?
A: Say ‘hello’ to them, ask them how they are, ask them if they know about Jimmy’s, ask if they would like a something to eat or drink.

Q:What would you like the general public to know about homelessness?
A: to recognise that homeless people are just like us but maybe they have had difficulty in their lives and like everyone they deserve another chance.

Q: How will the money that is raised be used?
A: We would like you to come back after you have completed your challenge and we can discuss the options available and you can help us decide.

Other things I learnt about Jimmy’s:

*People who stay at Jimmy’s are called guests.

*Jimmy’s accepts adults only, men and women. (They can bring their dog if they have one because dogs are good companions).

* Guests are given their own room and they are given 3 meals a day. Guests can stay until they have been found appropriate housing.

* Jimmy’s offers guest the opportunity to attend  life skills classes like cooking, money management and debt advice, access to a GP and legal support.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and the information that I found out, I hope you found it interesting. If you would like to support my challenge by donating to this brilliant charity your generosity will be so appreciated by myself, Jimmy’s and all the people who they support. Thank you.
