Story

Summary

On Saturday 5 September 2020, Joe and Steve will tackle 26.2 miles along the River Thames. We hope you will support our efforts by contributing to our fundraising campaign for MASH - Manchester Action on Street Health. MASH supports some of the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and stigmatised women in society.

Our story

Joe originally had his sights set on the Sunday 26 April 2020 London Marathon which was then postponed to Sunday 5 October 2020 and then again to 2021. Training began on Sunday 13 October 2019 with a baptism of fire running the Hatfield half. After the initial postponement in March, the training didn't stop clocking around 30 miles a week in anticipation of the October date.  As it became clear this was looking unlikely he and Steve hatched a plan to run a virtual marathon.  After what feels like an age, a couple of pairs of trainers and another London Marathon postponement he's itching to log a time and move on with his life.

Steve is looking to claim the Moore family marathon record which is currently held by his Uncle Colin. Steve had his world adventure cut short due to the virus and in order to fill those hours at home he opted to live the athletes life of eating, sleeping and running. He has clocked some serious mileage over the last few months and is looking in good form ahead of the race!

The route

Starting in Wapping, we will cross Tower Bridge heading down to Chiswick Bridge (13.8 miles). From here we will cross the bridge and traverse the North side of the river finishing roughly at the Millennium Bridge.

Who are MASH?

MASH supports women experiencing challenges including homelessness and mental ill-health. They work with women in Manchester who sex work to empower them and promote health, wellbeing and personal safety.

MASH’s team of dedicated staff and volunteers support women via their drop-in centre and via their specialist drop-in vehicle which travels around the streets of Manchester late at night providing a safe space for women to access support.

The charity relies heavily on the generosity of supporters to help keep the van on the road five evenings per week. Women who are sex working can access a wide range of expert support from MASH including sexual health screenings, counselling, advice on housing, free condoms and simply a safe space where they won’t be judged.

Like all charities MASH has felt the effect of the COVID
pandemic. Here is a video outlining how they've had to adapt during the crisis:

Please consider donating to this worthy cause, no matter how big or small. We would like to thank you in advance for your support. You can come down on the day to cheer us on!
