I Have now completed the challenge of riding 2000km + Calais > L’Aquila, Italy! 

Total distance complete:  1,414.7 MILES (2,263KM). Elevation gain totals to 64,067 FEET CLIMBED.

I decided to leave a day early and give myself a “rest day” on the penultimate day (which didnt happen in the end, unless you look at relative daily values!)

There have as you might imagine, been many ups and downs on this mammoth achievement for me. I have a achieved a particular self respect for my new-found ability to manage the distances in the heat and more so for sticking to my commitments and finding my way to manage this. I gladly take my helmet off to myself!

I have had to do all I could to avoid repetitive strain injury over the whole ride so to allow enough time for self therapy after the rides I left before dawn almost every day to be in transit between 6-10 hours total. This has been essential in getting to destinations before the sun went down (in most cases, this was managed).

There were technical difficulties with the bike requiring some very important maintenance and this alone has been challenging!, not to mention trying to find a local bike shop:

Time was short in the evenings to update here, so I used the Facebook website to update when I could get round to it and you can see all these posts by simply clicking on any of the links. I have done this completely off my own incentive and without anyone with me to support on the long road, with no turning back!! 

I will let you know exactly how much has been raised once I know in the near future. In the mean time, heres some info about Greenpeace and what they have been doing;

The first ever campaign, launched with the founding of Greenpeace in 1971, ultimately resulted in a global ban of nuclear weapons testing. Since then, they’ve played a pivotal role in a number of successes on the way to a greener, juster and more peaceful world, including:

* the adoption of a ban on toxic waste exports to less developed countries

* a moratorium on commercial whaling

* a United Nations convention providing for better management of world fisheries

* a Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary

* a 50-year moratorium on mineral exploitation in Antarctica

* bans on the dumping at sea of radioactive and industrial waste and disused oil installations and

* an end to large-scale driftnet fishing on the high-seas.
