Many of you will likely already know that in September I will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats. I’m a massive fan of cycling (and showing off my latest Strava stats) so I’m excited at the prospect of this physical challenge.

What many of you won’t know, however, is that this will also be a personal challenge for me. I have chosen to do this cycle in support of the brilliant work carried out by the MS Society and for my equally brilliant daughter, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 10 years ago in 2011. It is a difficult disease to manage and the MS Society provides invaluable support, treatment and research.

MS is a neurological condition that occurs when your immune system, which normally protects you by fighting off infections, attacks your nerves by mistake. As your nerves are all over your body, it can cause a range of symptoms depending on which nerves have been affected. This means that everyone living with MS experiences it differently.

It can cause problems with mobility, balance and vision. Due to the way it manifests, it is not always a visible disability. It’s an unpredictable, often painful disease and, sadly, incurable. The MS Society are working tirelessly to find a treatment that will mean, one day, we will have a world free from the effects of MS. 

Lucy has always been amazing at not letting anything get in the way of what she wants. I’m hoping that, by doing my bit to help fund the research carried out by the MS Society, nothing ever will.
