Story
I'm running my first Marathon in support of APS Support UK. APS or Antiphospholipid Syndrome is an autoimmune disease which my wife Kathryn has been suffering from since 2009. APS causes approximately 15% of strokes, heart attacks and DVTs in the under 50s. In pregnancy, it is the most important treatable cause of recurrent miscarriage. Symptoms include: headaches, memory problems, cognitive difficulties, dizziness, joint pain and fatigue.
The illness has radically affected Kathryn's life, severely restricting what she can do despite her valiant efforts to keep going. Doctors continue to do their best to help her, but at best, therapy, (including 4 days in hospital every 6 weeks) is stopping it from getting any worse.
I've run a number of half Marathons since 2011. After suffering illness and injury, I (foolishly?) wanted a new challenge and so entered the Brighton 2018 Marathon. With so many people doing Marathons these days it's easy to think it's not so tough, but even though my training has gone relatively well, 26.2 miles is still a very daunting distance! My first aim is to get to the starting line intact and my second is to get to the finish line! If I do it in under 4.5 hours I'll be delighted!
