Fundraising for MASH
Story
MASH provides 1-on-1 support to some of the most vulnerable women in Manchester.
In 2015 – 2016 MASH supported 884 women. The majority of the women were street and sauna workers. 250 of the women were supported by the MASH Outreach Van and 350 women used the services at the Drop-In. Since the start of the recession we have seen around a 20% increase in the number of women using MASH services.
133 women were given advice about exiting
117 Dodgy Punter reports were made
302 Instances of contraceptive advice being given
278 HIV tests done
273 women given emotional advice
360 women given safer sex advice
Women were given condoms on 2724 occasions
Hey guys.
As some of you will know I have been volunteering for 2 charities for a while now. One is for homeless gay kids and the other is too help female sex workers (prostitutes). The charity provides the women with counselling and support, needle exhange, rape crisis and so much more.
When I first got involved, a sex worker had been raped and badly beaten and stumbled in for help - the charity is the only refuge for alot of them in society. It is important to note that this lifestyle is a last resort for the majority of them, due to abuse and financial strain. A large proportion of the woman are sex trafficked across Europe to the UK and forced to work in the sex industry. On top of all of this society has dehumanised and isolated these women.
I am now fundraising for the charity, culminating with running the Belfast marathon in May with 4 other friends. It's something I've come very passionate about and I'm asking for any help anyone can give.
Ideas for fundraising are coffee mornings, wine and cheese parties, cocktail evenings (an excuse to get drunk haha) or just generally asking for small donations. Gym goers/workers could also consider selling a batch of protein balls/bites too. Or just taking some buns to your office and selling them. I will provide a slideshow or information package for you to talk with friends about if you like. All donations will be done through the Just Giving website at www.justgiving.com/jonny-glenn
