As many of you know, Vicki and I have both worked with children in Kenya through the charity Education for Life.  We both have a heart for these children and with a big birthday coming up I have decided to celebrate by raising money to support them.  We are booked in to complete a skydive on 27th June, which was not what my family and friends expected me to want to do for my 70th, however these kids are worth it!

I am feeling quite relaxed about the prospect of jumping out of a plane... at the moment.  Vicki however is pretty apprehensive!  We both want to raise as much money for the charity as possible.

Education for Life is a Christian charity that has been operating in Kenya for over a decade.  Their first project was to set up a school and an orphanage in Likoni, near Mombasa and this work has continued, including providing community housing, a children's home and many other projects, one of which being their feeding programme and fresh water project.  Everyday the Mama of Education for Life cook a meal for the children and the staff of Tumaini Timbwani School and also the local children.  They also provide porridge for the children who are not given breakfast at home.  The fresh water project has enabled local people to set up a business which supplies affordable clean water to the local community.

This year for the first time sine the work started they were not able to feed the local children during the Easter holiday due to lack of funds and struggling to keep up with the water supplies.  The trip for water was 6 miles but now is 20 miles to collect 2,500 litres.  They use 10,000 every day, making this an enormous challenge to keep on top of the demand and finances.

Many of the children struggle to get nutritious food and for many, the feeding programme is the only way for them to get one decent meal a day.  Without this they can get sick very quickly especially those with HIV and other physical disabilities.

Having worked with these children, seen the changes in the lives of the people who have access to these programmes and the love of those who provide them, I know we can make a difference.
