Story

After unexpectedly heavy rainfall in Chitral and the wider Hindu Kush region of Northern Pakistan, on 31 July 2013, a flash flood tore through the Kalash Valley of Rumbur doing immeasurable damage.

Water channels, electricity supplies, roads, even entire fields, were washed way, down the Rumbur River leaving a trail of debris and destruction.

With no electricity or drinking water, and continued rainfall, things in the Kalash valley have been awful, but the long term ramifications of destroyed crops and a long hungry winter are far worse.

Wild Frontiers Managing Director, Jonny Bealby, has been on the phone to a shell-shocked Saifullah - the chief spokesperson for the Kalash of Rumbur - and agreed to send funds from the Wild Frontiers Foundation to help restore the main power supply and drinking water to the community.

Many Wild Frontiers clients will know Saifullah as not only as the spokesperson for the community, but the charming host of the guesthouse where we stay when visiting the Kalash. Unfortunately his guesthouse didn't escape damage and was filled with mud from the slides.

The Wild Frontiers Foundation has donated £3000 to help with the recovery, but they are going to need much more to rebuild the water channels, fix damaged buildings, plant new crops and get their lives back in order.

As a marginalised minority tribe, in a remote and almost inaccessible region, no one else is going to help them.
