Story

Running for Steve

Steve Wardlaw, the father of my dear friend Meg Marsland, passed away quietly in his sleep this October from complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

Roger and I met Steve and his wife Jane 12 years ago at the Marsland's "extended family Thanksgiving" - the extended family being not just her father, step-mother Jane and brother Mike, but also several of us local Park City friends without other "family" in town.  Steve joined all of us at Snowbird that day to ski the Cirque and enjoy an incredible early season blue bird powder day. I clearly remember watching him come down through the bowl and being truly impressed!  At that time and age, my own father, as much as he would have loved it, could never have found his way through that terrain.  Steve pulled up at the Tram dock with a giant smile and happily jumped right back in line for another lap.

Later that night as we all gathered around the Thanksgiving table we shared stories, incredible laughter and Steve's famous Taos margaritas.  That notorious Thanksgiving has since gone down in our PC "family" history without rival for fun, laughs, debauchery and incredible friendships made.  I reflect on that time now with such gratitude for the first of many shared special moments, holidays and laughs with Steve and Jane.  The nature of our lives here in Park City has always meant making a family from our friends and to say that Roger, Owen, Alice and I have been blessed with the Marsland and Wardlaw families as our own is a monumental understatement.

Steve fought bravely through many years with PSP with a strong heart and bright attitude.  He never lost his smile and the twinkle in his eyes while the rest of his body slowly gave up on him.  He was an inspiration to his children and those who knew him well in his love of skiing, the mountains and of course a good strong margarita!

It is with great honor that I have chosen to run the London 2015 marathon in Steve's honor with the goal of raising $3,000 (approximately 2,000 GBP) for the PSP Association to help fund research and support other families affected by this disease.

Steve was an avid marathon runner and this April will be 30 years since he ran the London Marathon himself.   Meg and I are training to match his time, a lofty goal, of 3 hours 56 minutes!

Please help me honor Steve and support the PSP Association with a generous donation today.  My marathon entry fund raising commitment is £1,500 in sponsorship, with the first £350 due by January 31st 2015.  I am aiming to raise more than the required minimum and therefor have set a goal of £2,000 (or $3,000) by April 26.

Thank you!
Katherine
