Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. The account below relates to my acceptance on the London 100 bike ride for August 16 but this was cancelled. Because of Covid.I therefore decided to ride 100 miles (160km) with a similar ascent from Our home to St Tropez to Monte Carlo as because of Covid quarantine the return to the UK was unpredictable. During two months of lockdown in France I was not allowed to cycle. Once allowed out I trained, with my husband in preparation for June 22 to do the ride. evidence from Strava, indicates that I completed a 100 km (62.5miles) ride on the25th May with an ascent of 1657meters (5456 feet) and 115km (72 miles) on 28th . I felt completely ready and able to do the 100 mile ride along the south coast of France. Then, I tripped on a step in the garden and broke my left wrist.! The plaster comes off on July 17th And hopefully all will be well.It would have been great to do the London 100 and have a medal and the official result as evidence but by the time my plaster comes off it will be too hot and too busy to cycle the south of France until at least the end of August. I decided therefore to invest in a turbo trainer and cycle one-handed on our Veranda. The turbo trainer has My E-training app on which one can set a route and the trainer alters the resistance in keeping with the actual inclines of the route . Unfortunately I was not able to download the actual London route which would have been brilliant But I compiled my own and completed the ride on June 22. I started at 6:15 am and finished at 4:30. Unlike a direct Strava recording this does not include the actual time separately from the travelling time and therefore it looks as if I did the whole thing in seven hours which I absolutely did not! ( 10hrs) I had a number of breaks but took a slightly longer one at the halfway mark during which time my app decided to not record further and therefore I had to record two separate Stretches each of 50 miles. (80km)
The benefits, if there are any!!) Were that I did not have to cross London at The crack of dawn and nor did I have to fight with other cyclists or obstacles on the way. There was never a need to slow down or stop except when I chose to have a break. The biggest drawback was the Lack of stimulus and company although I did watch a number of series on the television and also followed the birds around the garden. It wasn’t the same though as the enthusiasm of being with the other cyclists. I hope that the recordings from my app and Strava are adequate to persuade people I actually did this! My sore bottom and right knee and numb little finger on my right hand reminded me!
I was inspired to prepare for this charity event as my daughter and her partner participated last year. As a supporter and watching all those charity logo vests racing by, was unbelievably moving. It was to be a significant challenge for me because of the hills and time limit but the preparation was all pleasure, riding a bicycle in the open-air is wonderful.
I’m riding for this charity because the thought of those victims leaving home one morning in good faith and not returning and nobody knowing where they are as well as what they go through is unutterably beyond words.
I am aware that there are allsorts of calls for charitable donations but any amount you might like to give would be gratefully received.
