As most of you reading this will already know, in Summer 2018 my Mum was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer, and since then she has came through the massive operation to have her bladder and surrounding lymph nodes removed. Thankfully, my Mum is as tough as they come (probably the strongest person I have ever met!) and she has remained so positive and fighting like the warrior we all know she is.

So, my younger brother, Maurice, and I ran the 2018 Deep RiverRock Belfast Half Marathon for our Mum...with so many of you kindly donating to our JustGiving pages - we were all overwhelmed with your unbelievable generosity! Thankfully, our Mum was able to come up to Belfast and be there to see us crossing the finishing line. Mum was so proud of the money (and awareness) we raised, and the messages of support via the JustGiving pages provided her with great comfort through the tough times.

Therefore, I have decided to take a step up from the half marathon and run my first full marathon...taking part in the 2019 Deep RiverRock Belfast Marathon in aid of Cancer Focus NI.

It is a scary thought that 1 in every 2 of us are likely to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives. Cancer is something we are all aware of, but on a personal level, until it hit someone who I love dearly, that 1 in 2 statistic was something you do not expect to happen to you or your family...and when it does, it really is devastating.

Thankfully, Cancer Focus NI provides care and support services for cancer patients and their families. They offer a range of cancer prevention programmes to help people lessen their risk of getting cancer and fund scientific research into the causes and treatment of the horrible disease. Most of their amazing work is funded through donations and fundraising so they can't do it without all of us.

So...I want to make my Mum proud…and raise some much needed funds for a fantastic, local charity close to many of our hearts. With everyone being so generous with Maurice and I in fundraising for the 2018 Deep RiverRock Belfast Half Marathon, I really do not want to impose on anyone, or make anyone feel under pressure to donate again, so if anyone can give anything from £1 it all helps!
