Story

UPDATE   - from Kate, Laurie's daughter.

On Laurie's first attempt at his cycle / climb 2021 challenge he reached Land's End from Pencoed, an incredible feat at age 89, but unfortunately on his way cycling back to Wales to climb Snowdon, he was beset with injury, illness and stolen belongings, meaning he needed to stop, recuperate and reassess (after around 450 cycle miles! Still unbelievably impressive!)

So feeling well again, Laurie has taken the sensible but still very challenging option of cycling from Pencoed to Pen Y Fan, and to climb Pen Y Fan. A scaled down version of the original but still pretty mind-bending considering he will still be sleeping out and is.. 89! He does hope to continue through Wales to complete more peaks, Cader Idris and Snowdon and onwards over time, all being well, So more updates to follow!

Following completion of last years challenge for Llamau, a cycle ride from my home in Pencoed - Lands End - John o' Groats..(age 88) I hope this year to try an exciting twist, and will attempt to combine cycling the LEJOG route with climbing the 3 highest peaks in the UK.

On Monday 21st June 2021, I will set off from home in Pencoed and head to Chepstow in preparation for the first leg of the journey, cycling from Chepstow to Lands’ End. From there...

  • Cycle from Lands’ End to Snowdon,
  • Climb Snowdon, return to base,
  • Cycle from Snowdon to the Lake District,
  • Climb Scarfell Pike, return to base,
  • Cycle from Scarfell Pike to Carlisle,
  • Catch the ferry to Isle of Arron and cycle part of the island,
  • Ferry back to mainland Scotland,
  • Cycle to Ben Nevis,
  • Climb Ben Nevis, return to base,
  • Cycle from Ben Nevis to John o’ Groats.

I will be doing this challenge unaided, and taking everything I need with me on my bike. I hope to 'sleep rough' as many nights as possible, this allows me to use the long days to make an early start and cycle on into the evening. I also want to do this to raise awareness of those who have no choice but to sleep rough, and unlike me don't have money, bank accounts or family to look out for them.

I am also going to be dressed completely in Green, as a reminder of the importance of taking care of the environment!

I do hope this new exciting challenge will capture peoples interest and raise much needed funds and awareness for the wonderful work Llamau do.

Llamau believe that no young person, woman, or family should ever have to experience homelessness. That's why I'm joining Team Llamau and taking on a challenge this 2021. Llamau are challenging it's supporters to run, jump, swim, walk or pedal for them in 2021. This will create Team Llamau; a group of like-minded individuals who want to make a difference in their community. The effects of the COVID pandemic have been far reaching and severe and so, more than ever, it's important to support the work of Llamau who are helping some of Wales' most vulnerable people. Together we can end homelessness, will you join?

Many thanks

Laurie
