"Why? Are you crazy?" I hear you ask!
"Yes, possibly, but there is also this..."
We knew that our little monkey had a Chromosome deletion. When we first found out we hit the internet to do some research. Dr Google wasn't much help and it turns out that it's so rare it doesn't actually have a name. Amongst our searches we found Unique (www.rarechromo.org).
UNIQUE helped us find out more about her 12q deletion. They had compiled a short information download that gave us more details about her chromosomes and what her deletion might mean for her in the short and long term. The future is very much unknown, there is little research and scientific knowledge on 12q deletions as it is very rare, which means that our little monkey has the ability to create her own future, just as she likes. With so little known and no real comparatives, we celebrate every milestone no matter how big or small.
UNIQUE also put us in contact with other families in our local area who have chromosomal disorders. We have found other 12q families and been able to build a small network of allies and digital friends in countries all over the world. UNIQUE is run by volunteers and by donations and the work they do in supporting families through what can be a very daunting, overwhelming and emotionally challenging time is exceptional. They have been tremendously supportive to us and I wanted to give back to them to show our appreciation for all the amazing work they do.
I have completed a couple of marathons before, one in Rome back in 2011 and a very hilly one in San Francisco back in 2014 (turned out after I signed up to it that it's one of the top 15 hardest in the world) but I wanted even more of a challenge and that's why I came up with my challenge list. I have just turned 40 years old and I want to have completed an ultra run before I turn 41. My ultimate goal is to raise £2018 before the end of August 2018.
Please, please, please donate any spare change to me, donate on here, donate by text. Donate to cover every race, donate because you think I'm completely bonkers or donate a little bit for each race. Whatever you choose, please donate something. Every little penny really does count!
I apologise in advance for my shameless FB posts, emails and other plugging over the next 18 months asking for your hard earned money, I know it's a lot to ask, but it really is for a great cause!
Ooh and don't forget to tick the Giftaid box!
