Story

Len called the Queen Elizabeth hospital his second home and often joked he should have his own personal parking space!

We first got to know the QE when I was taken very poorly in 2002 with pneumonia and ended up in intensive care. After a month I came home, thanks to their outstanding care. In 2006 our son Oscar was stillborn at 40 weeks +4 weighing 9lbs 1oz. The loving care we received through this devastating time was amazing - from immediately after when we spent precious time with him in the unit, to when the midwifes at his birth came to his funeral. Their care helped make our earth-shattering loss a bit more bearable. Len became poorly with rheumatoid arthritis and once again he was given fantastic care and attention from Dr Heycock and her team which carried on to his death, as his condition progressively worsened. He also developed COPD and Pulmonary Fibrosis which meant he ended up for the last few years on 24 hour oxygen therapy. Again, the compassionate and intelligent support he received from Dr Alcock and his team was a god send to Len. When he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma once again the QE were there for him. Throughout this time we continued to pursue fertility treatment and after much heart break we managed to get pregnant on the third and final round of IVF and successfully delivered beautiful twin girls - Molly & Phoebe - on 14th July 2011, to overwhelming joy to us both. Len continued to suffer from ongoing and frequent hospital admissions, and sadly after a stroke and then readmission he passed away in Critical Care at the QE on Monday 2nd January 2017.

Len was a truly wonderful man who  was fiercely loyal, incredibly loving, very bright, brave and insightful. He gave a lot to the world and we were lucky to have had him in ours. We would now like to give back, via any donations received at this sad time, to the QE in recognition for the major part they have played in Len's life - good & sad. Any money donated will be split equally between: the Fertility Unit, Rheumatology Department, Respiratory Department and the Critical Care Unit and will go towards new equipment and staff training.

Thank you for reading Len's story and donating today!
