Story

This year Lorna will reach her 50th birthday(!) and has decided to take on a personal challenge of walking 60km (37.3 miles) in one day.  This really is quite a challenge for her, as she is someone who can be a bit of a sofa slouch and who has always preferred parking as close to a destination as possible to avoid walking too far!

However, with the support of her great friend Kathie, Lorna is working hard to get herself to a point where she can be as prepared as possible for what lies ahead.  Kathie has successfully completed 25 miles of the Test Way route 3 times and, luckily for Lorna, she was looking for something different to do this year, so she has ended up with the unenviable task of motivating Lorna on their training walks (whilst trying to ignore the moans and groans about aching legs and tired feet) and has 'been volunteered' to do the BIG walk with Lorna to make sure the challenge is completed!

The event is an organised walk on 13th May with "Just Walk" and is a circular route starting and ending at Goodwood Racecourse.  It will take us over the South Downs (aaarrrghhh, hills!!) and we are hoping to complete the 60 kilometres (yikes!) in around 14 hours.  Our walk starts at 8.00am on the Saturday, so our target time should see us get across the line in time for last orders and some much needed anaesthetic!

There is no requirement for us to raise sponsorship but we thought that, if we could raise some funds to donate to a worthy cause and give us an extra incentive to keep going, then we would like to do so.

Our lovely friend, Liz Chislett-Milne, owner of Grovely
Pet supplies, suggested the Hounds for Heroes charity and as both of us are dog owners, we loved the idea!  Take a look at the Hounds for Heroes  website to find out more about the incredible work they do in providing specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women of both the UK Armed Forces and Civillian Emergency Services.

When the guns fall silent on the battlefield. or the sirens stop wailing in the streets, the battle with disability, trauma and bereavement go on forever for all those affected.. It is in the aftermath of conflict and trauma that Hounds For Heroes dogs will come into their own. Taught to problem solve and to be intuitive, their dogs will remove the sense of disability in the client’s life and replace it with a feeling of ability.

Hounds For Heroes will partner a client with a “cadet” dog, enabling them to start the journey that will restore their dignity and self worth. Through the partnership they will regain the unique feeling of loyalty, trust and team spirit that is lost on leaving the military or civilian services.
