We Support people with prostate cancer to Improve theirs and their families lives

Story

I will be climbing the National Three Peaks within 24 hours on the 5th July 2019 I am raising money for The Prostate charity which is very close to my heart.

On 19th January 2019 my Grandad John Power passed away, he was the ROCK of our family. Grandad looked after my Nana for 3 years when she had dementia and never complained about how hard it was for him day in day out. Sadly, Nana passed away in 2011 which was devastating for all of us especially Grandad.

He was always full of good advice (even when you didn’t want it)! 😊 He also knew how to enjoy himself, even at 84 years old he would stay up at parties’ dancing and singing sometimes staying out longer than his grandchildren! He had characteristics which made him instantly likeable and certainly made a lasting impression on most people he met. He was such a caring, loving person and loved his family so much.

Late 2018 Grandad was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and we could see he was getting tired but thought it was contained. Devastatingly the Cancer travelled to his lungs and bones and suddenly it was all too real, and he took very ill. He worried so much about his family especially his three daughters who went to live with him for 7 weeks to care for him, he wouldn’t have had it any other way. They say those weeks they laughed and cried with Grandad talking about old times and reminiscing.

What was so upsetting was how quickly it all happened, one day he was up and walking about then 7 weeks later he wasn’t Please let us try and stop this horrible disease.

With your donations the charity could do extensive research into curing the spread of Prostate Cancer. The project is conducting world-first research into cell division and decoding the deadly spread of prostate cancer.

The protein PlexinB1 is common in cases of advanced prostate cancer sufferers. The research is now looking to inhibit PlexinB1’s functions and stop the cancer spreading. PlexinB1 has healthy and necessary functions, so it is important not to ‘knock-out ‘all its functions. The aim is to develop ‘monoclonal’ antibodies and only target the functions relevant to the spread of cancerous cells.

New antibodies that stop the spread of prostate cancer cells could contain early prostate cancer within the prostate, therefore stopping it from becoming advanced. The research team are currently testing a range of different drugs and, with the results will begin to look at using them at different states of the disease.

Thank you
