Story
On Sunday 29th July I am taking part in a 100 mile Prudential RideLondon cycle through London and into Surrey. I have been training hard doing spin classes and 5K Parkruns as well as punishing visits to the gym. But getting fit is not my only challenge. I have had to get used to riding a road bike. I did a training session with Mike and the kids cycling 99 kilometers around the Isle Of Wight.. Amy tells me I don’t go down hills fast enough. She tells me I am damaging the brake pads and I should just let go! And I should pedal hard at the bottom of the hill (when I am at top speed!) to build up speed for the next big hill up.
I am not doing all this for nothing however. I have set up this Just Giving page as I would like to raise money for Antibiotic Research. This a cause very close to my heart. My son Christopher spent 2 separate 9 week blocks in hospital last year with sepsis caused by a kidney stone blockage. We nearly lost him a few times but one time was particularly memorable. One night while visiting him his temperature shot up to 42 degrees. He was trembling and he was violently sick. His body had suddenly become resistant to the antibiotics he was getting. Our wonderful NHS staff (including Microbiology who do amazing things BIG SHOUT!) were on red alert and frantically trying to get a new antibiotic as quickly as possible. An antibiotic was found by midnight and his temperature came down very quickly.
Antibiotic Research affects us all. If there were no new antibiotics, then any infections become untreatable. The failure to develop new antibiotics is of great concern. Antibiotic resistance is life-threatening, with the young and old being most at risk of resistant infections.
