We are excited to share Team Jade (Elaine, Francis, Freya, Kim, Martin & Lynn) are taking part in the running challenge at Loch Ness Marathon & The Festival of Running in Inverness on 3rd October 2021. Martin, running on the same day will be taking on the amazing London Marathon. 

This race and race distance will be a first for many of us and we are excited to share we are together raising money for MPN Voice.

MPN Voice is a charity that funds research into myeloproliferative neoplasms and supports patients, their families and healthcare professionals via education and advocacy. 

Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs) are rare cancers which strike the bone marrow and effects the control of blood cell levels. As some of you will know, my sister Jade was diagnosed with Polycythaemia Vera (PV - a common type of MPN). 

In this type of MPN, blood production over-heats, the body begins to produce high levels of ‘sticky’ blood cells. These abnormal blood cells adhere to each other and to blood vessel walls, clogging blood flow. High cell counts and sticky cells put people with these types of MPNs at high risk of heart attack, stroke and deep vein thrombosis. 

MPNs effect fewer than one in one hundred thousand people. Jade was diagnosed with PV in October 2020 and has already heroically dealt with a number of challenges including, pulmonary embolism, regular venesections (removing a pint of blood regularly), a transient ischaemic attack (TIA or mini-stroke), regular headaches and severe tiredness. Jade is managing 'the C word' like an absolute hero, I admire her strength and bravery as she continues to live her best life. Jade's an amazing Teacher who loves her School & Class, the biggest challenge to Jade has been missing some time away from the kids. 

Experts are stumped as to what causes MPNs. Researchers in the field hope to understand more about the mechanisms behind these diseases so that they offer people with MPNs better treatments and ultimately a cure.
