As most of you know in 2017 I was given the devastating news I had breast cancer.  I spent the majority of that year having operations, 5 months of gruelling chemotherapy, a month of radiotherapy & 3 weekly Herceptin injections until August of this year.  This process takes its toll on your body & mind -  during treatment all you can think about is getting to the end of it, but once you reach the end, that’s when your mind tries to process all that you have been through.  I struggled, trying to come terms with what had happened to me & accept that my life had changed &  I had a “new me”.  I lost my confidence & zest for life.

 I am lucky to attend a local Breast Cancer support group where we have regular speakers.  One month a speaker came from the charity Odyssey, who organise adventure weeks for anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis to attend.  I was lucky enough to obtain a place in September 2018 & spent an amazing week with a group of other cancer survivors challenging myself to do things I never thought I would!  The remarkable benefits of this course for all the participants was clear to see, we all finished the course in a much better place than when we started.  Take a look at their website to see what they do:

In short they aim to “help people with cancer regain their confidence and enjoyment of life by creating a magical adventure through a unique blend of the unexpected and a variety of fun challenges and a lot of fun”.  Course are currently run up to 5 times a year and they would like to be able to run them more frequently but are restricted as they are entirely charity funded.

This week was at no cost to any of the participants, it is totally free (each course costs the charity approximately £12,000 to run for the week).  Odyssey will have been running for 25 years this year &  I have been lucky enough to gain a place on their celebratory charity fundraiser.......... Soooo I am challenging myself to Canoe 90km over 8 days down the Harkan River in Sweden alongside  some of the fantastic people I met on my original adventure. We will be sleeping under canvas (you all know how much I love camping!!), have primitive washing facilities and cooking over open fires.

I am funding the cost of the trip myself so all monies kindly dontated will go directly to Odyssey to pay for more people who have had the devastation of dealing with a cancer diagnosis to benefit from this amazing experience.

Odyssey gave me back my confidence, zest for life and the realisation that I can still live life to the full, now its my turn to give something back.
