Story

On the 7th September 2022 I will complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

Sexual Assault and Harassment is still considered a taboo subject, it leaves people fearful and vulnerable, therefore many fail to have a discussion about it. Fear of judgement from others, fear of being seen as weak, fear of offending others or causing them distress; nobody wants to talk about it. Many feel intimidated to share their story as they compare their experiences to others and subsequently invalidate their own feelings.

I want people to be able to access the necessary help, therefore wish to aid SARSVL in their funding to provide their resources that I feel are vital to initiate the recovery of traumatised individuals.

The workers at SARSVL provide friendly faces at a times when people feel alone. They take the extra mile, further than their duties require, to ensure individuals are safe and feel secure when leaving their care. The process leading up to attending SARSVL is tiring and and can leave individuals feeling helpless. But the women approach everyone with care and compassion. Reminding you that you are not responsible for what had happened and that healing will be hard but nevertheless in the end it will be okay and you are worth no less than before. They do not judge nor asked individuals to justify theirselves, they listen. Many just need someone to listen. To realise that just because discussing sexual assault is distressing  and provokes discomfort, you cannot just pretend it didn't happen. It is considered easier to dismiss and interrogate the fundamentals of an assault rather than believe the worst case scenario. We must accept and establish that sexual assault still happens, to people we know and perpetrated by people we know.

In order for individuals the who have endured sexual assault to get the support they require, we must first validate their experiences.
