We provide essential support to limb reconstruction patients at King's

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are cycling the Brighton 50 mile route to raise money for  the Kings College Hospital Limb Reconstruction Trust.  This small charity provides support for people undergoing limb reconstruction surgery and treatment, whether as a result of a congenital condition, an accident, or (increasingly) military service.  Extra support like counselling and physiotherapy can be limited for such patients: this charity helps provide the 'extras' that help people get better, sooner.

As we think you all know Marit  has been very fortunate to receive the best possible care from her limb reconstruction surgeon and a team of nurses and physiotherapists both here and in London.  Although Marit received most of her treatment courtesy of our medical insurance, she also attended her surgeon's limb reconstruction clinic at Kings College Hospital and we were very impressed with the medical team there who made everyone feel that they were a high priority despite a very busy clinic.

Before deciding to have the surgery, Marit was asked to speak to a current patient and to access an online support group.  What she heard and read made her seriously question if she would be prepared to go through with it.  Having your leg rebroken, fitted with an external frame and realigned may sound simple, a 'no-brainer' when the outcome can be so good,  but it means a long haul for many people.  It can be painful, there are medical dangers like mal-union and infection which often prolong the process, and at the very least there is giving up work and your usual life for a undetermined period.  Low levels of patient well-being are consistently reported by limb reconstruction patients, and divorce and depression are common outcomes.

We were very lucky, Marit got better in record breaking time.  This was partly due to the extra nursing care and physiotherapy she had.  We think everyone should have this level of care but unfortunately it just isn't there for all.  That is why we would like to support the Kings College Hospital Limb Reconstruction Trust which provides extra resources in the form of nursing, counselling and physiotherapy.
