Story

On Sunday 13th December,  Marlow U14’s plus parents and friends will be walking to show our support for our great friend, age group dad and member Cliff Giles and to raise some funds for the Thames Hospice.
As many of you will know Cliff is fighting an incredibly brave battle with cancer and is undergoing intensive treatment at the moment.
The walk will be from Henley train station back to Marlow Rugby Club (10miles) along the Thames towpath, whilst sticking to all govt guidelines re social distancing and rule of 6.
For those who would like there will be the option of an early start from Marlow RFC to walk both ways to Henley & back, leaving early enough to meet those before they start their walk back from Henley.

Take a read of Corrina's courageous words and we hope you can give generously!

Back in the day, there was a fast, tough and determined right wing who came over to the UK from Australia. After years of brutal, gritty school and club rugby back home, he settled here and played for Drifters in his spare time, whilst he also did the very important job of running a pub!
Roll his life forward 30+ years and his boy is smashing it as scrum half for Marlow RFC U14’s.
That’s where the fairy tale ends.
Cliff Giles (Toby’s dad) was recently diagnosed with head and neck cancer and whilst Cliff’s ‘never give up’ mantra drives him on every day to beat this horrible monster, the Giles family could not have got through the last 6 months without the support of our very good friends and Thames Hospice.
As far too many of us know, when the ‘C word’ is dropped your world stops for a minute, hours, days or months at a time. Cliff is fighting the fight and will never give up, neither will his family, but without the support of the teams at the hospice we would have truly fallen apart. We are also going to need them more than ever in the coming months. Thames Hospice isn’t just for elderly, end of life patients (although it does that too) but it offers families like ours (Cliff is only 53) vital support for pain management; occupational therapy, which can be as simple as home delivery of pillows, cushions, chairs etc to make daily life more comfortable; emotional/mental health support for us and the children; financial advice; liaison with GP/hospital/pharmacy to alleviate all the stress that comes with that and most importantly a dedicated specialist nurse, plus 24/7 phone line which we have used many times. Our dedicated nurse, Bridget, has helped so much already and we know she is there for us whenever we need her.
Thames Hospice receives just 30% of it’s funding from the NHS, the remaining 70% is from charitable donations....towards the £8million it needs every year to deliver the facility and this amazing service to our community.
Please give as much as you are able...or if you can’t afford it, just pop that 1p of change into a Thames Hospice collection box if you ever see one. You will make such a difference to someone’s life.
Thank you from us all and wish us luck on this journey, we will never give up.

Thank you  from all of us!
