We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

So why have I decided to raise money in support of cancer research UK and why is it such a good cause? First, here are some cancer-related facts:

·More than 1 in 3 people will develop cancer at some point in their lives.

·Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer.

·Cancer causes more than 1 in 4 of all deaths in the UK.

·In the UK in 2010, around 430 people died from cancer every day - that is one person every four minutes.

But we are slowly winning:

·In the last 40 years, the chances of surviving cancer have doubled.

·Cancer death rates in the UK have fallen by around a fifth over the last thirty years and by 10% over the last decade.

·Half of people diagnosed with cancer now survive their disease for at least five years.

·Almost three-quarters of children are now cured of their disease, compared with around a quarter in the late 1960s.

Where does cancer research UK come in?

·Cancer research UK funds over half of the UK’s cancer research, which relates to over 4000 scientists doctors and nurses.

·Cancer research UK helps millions of people every year get the information they need to understand the disease.

·Campaigns on key cancer issues such as access to cancer drugs, screening and reducing the use of tobacco.

·Measures progress in beating cancer on 10 goals. See http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-us/who-we-are/our-goals/

How does your money help?

·With your help, newer, kinder treatments can be developed faster.

·Raising just £100 could buy more than 1,100 specially designed “cryotubes” used by scientists to store cancer cells and tumour samples.

·£500 could pay for a training afternoon for a whole team of cancer information nurses – helping them develop the skills to deal with emotionally difficult calls and talk to children and young people about cancer.

·£1000 could pay for three people to join a clinical trial and see whether having chemotherapy before surgery and taking a new drug such as panitumumab could save more lives from bowel cancer.
