Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 1st September 2019 I shall be running the Maidenhead Half Marathon to raise money for 2 extremely worthy charities, this page explains why I shall be donating to Younger People with Dementia.
My father was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia age just 63 classing him as a 'younger person with dementia', it was at this point we were introduced to Younger People with Dementia. YPWD offered support to my father, through various therapies and home visits and have continued to support the family following my fathers rapid decline leading to need for specialist care within a nursing home.
Young Onset Dementia affects adults under the age of 65 and nationally there are about 40,000 younger people with dementia. Traditional services are designed to meet the needs and expected therapeutic out-comes of older adults and subsequently, access to activities appropriate for younger adults with dementia is limited. Younger People with Dementia (Berkshire) charity was set up in 2012 to assist in filling this gap in provision for those with young onset dementia and their family and carers. Our aim is to provide meaningful respite that works with current provision over the working week.
Donations will help fund Admiral Nurses who regularly visit and support young adults with dementia and their families through this extremely difficult disease. Help to provided activities and education for patients and their families. Provide care and therapy for patients. Most importantly, to raise the awareness of Dementia in young people.
