Story

Hi, I'm Maya and I am in year 8 at Archer Academy in North London.

I've just turned 13. In the Jewish tradition, as a thirteen year old I am now Bat Mitzvah, which means I am accountable for my actions and bearing my own responsibility in community life.

I spent the first 9 years of my life in Tanzania and India and I now live in London. I've gone to great schools and I'm very lucky.  The privileges I've had and my experiences growing up in other countries have made
me realise that not everyone is as lucky as me, particularly many women and
girls across the world trapped in a cycle of poverty. I want to give something
back.

So, what am I going to do? I'm working with CARE to help girls and women in the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities work their way out of poverty. I hope to encourage others to join in with me.
These girls often have to walk miles everyday just to get water, water,  which is often unclean. Due to this, they can't go to school, get a job and fulfil their potential.

-       As part of the Walk in her Shoes campaign I'll be walking at least 10,000 steps everyday from the 16th to the 22nd of April

-       I'm working with my school to
link this to our learning and I hope that lots of people across the school
will be engaged. Our head teacher wants us to appreciate how good our toilets
are compared to what others have (or don't have!)

-      There will be activities we’re planning across school, during the week 16th-22nd of April. And we’re hoping lots of others will sign up to the Walk in Her Shoes campaign for some collective fundraising. How about you?
