In memory of my dad, Mick Fryer, I am raising money for 2 fantastic causes by canoeing the 115 miles around Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002, then, devastatingly, in 2006 he was told the cancer had spread to the bone. At that point he was told the prognosis was an average of 2 years. Dad wasn’t settling for this though and fought so incredibly bravely until he sadly passed away in November 2016 at the age of 71.

Not only did dad fight an awe inspiring battle with his illness, but, along with the support of family, friends and many town residents, in 2014 he set up and ran a Cancer Research UK ‘Relay for Life’ event in Presteigne in Powys. The event has so far run for 3 years, with dad as Chair and mum as Co-Chair for the first 2 years. In those 2 years the event raised an incredible total of £63,899. The third year has also raised an additional £28,491.

In the 10 years since dad’s second diagnosis he (and mum) have been supported and cared for with such kindness, compassion and professionalism by two amazing organisations, the Bracken Trust – Supporting People Affected by Cancer (based in Llandrindod Wells in Powys) and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Despite dad’s illness he was always ready with a smile and a joke, which I think anyone who knew him would agree, and it’s this incredible spirit that has inspired me to raise money to help support the continued great works of these 2 vital organisations.

I will be solo-paddling my (Canadian style) open-canoe around Lake Geneva in June 2017 and anticipate the 115 mile circuit will take somewhere between 10 to 12 days (it’ll be my 50^th birthday while I’m out there, so my paddling may be a little slower than it used to be?!).
