Story

Thank you for taking your time to visit my fundraising page.

I will be volunteering in Guatemala, working alongside local communities helping those in the most vulnerable situations on a 10 week placement with Y-Care International. I have to reach my target of £800 before departure in June.

Y Care International is the international development and relief agency of the YMCA in the UK and Ireland. We work in partnership with YMCAs in the developing world, funding and supporting grassroots development programmes that help young people lift themselves out of poverty. All money fundraised will go directly to the charity and accounts for 10% of their overall costs to run these projects, you can read more about ICS and Y-Care below

By working with YMCAs and other youth organisations in some of the world's poorest communities, Y Care International helps to enrich the lives of disadvantaged young people in many ways: helping them learn how to stay healthy and safe, teaching them trades so that they can secure jobs and livelihoods, and offering support to young people affected by conflict and natural disasters. If I raise £800 pounds or more then I will be able to go and work on a team project in a Guatemalan community, and make a real difference to the lives of many impoverished young people, so any money you donate will not only help Y Care to keep sending volunteers abroad, but also mean that I myself can go as a volunteer and achieve something really worthwhile.

Any donations will be greatly appreciated no matter how small, and of course the more you donate the more likely it is that I will reach my target and the bigger the difference you will make for Y Care.

General break down of donations for every £1 donated

-84 pence goes directly to supporting young people in emergencies, in developing their skills and their communities and improving their health, and helping young people campaign for change.

-15 pence is invested to generate future revenue and on support costs

- 1 pence is spent on ensuring the organisation is robust and well-managed.

In order for me to raise this money I have many of ideas including attending a number of local schools to discuss the issues at hand and to also inform them on ways they can get involved with charitable organisations and even join the ICS scheme when they are of the right age. I also plan to organise a bake sale, dinner parties set at my home, raffles etc.

Some others facts about the ICS programme:

1.    ICS is led by VSO and funded by UK Government. VSO delivers the programme in partnership with respected development organisations (Raleigh International, Tearfund, Progressio, International Service, Restless Development, Skillshare International, Lattitude and YCare International) and funded by the Department for International Development (DFID).

      2.    ICS is open to everyone and no-one will be excluded on grounds of cost.  All volunteers are asked to fundraise as part of their journey and receive professional support to help them meet their goal.

      3.    The ICS programme covers flights, visas, travel and medical insurance, medication and vaccines, food and accommodation, and a minimal allowance while overseas. Volunteers receive extensive training and support to achieve the development outcomes of the programme.

      4.    ICS will deliver three key outcomes: to have a real and lasting impact through sustainable development projects; to help the volunteers, both those from the UK and from developing countries, learn key life-skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication and project planning; and to instil in these volunteers a life-long commitment to development, becoming active citizens, engaged in their communities and tackling the causes of poverty.

Again thank you very much for your time reading this and hopefully thank you very much again for your donations!! I will be keeping everyone updated on my progress and hope to be able to share this experience with you all!! :)
