Story
This is an appeal to raise money for the Oracle charity. Oracle funds research at the Head and Neck Department of the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in Sutton and Central London. The appeal comes from Morgan and Paul, Team Tortoise, taking part in the South Coast Sprint Triathlon on 4th July 2015. We will (if things go well!) be completing a 750m sea swim, a 20 km. cycle and a 5 km run.
Morgan is now three years post treatment for cancer, which was treated by the Head and Neck Department at the Sutton hospital site.
Morgan’s treatment and subsequent recovery have been
challenging for both him and his family, as it is for all cancer sufferers and
their loved ones. However, they all have no doubt that the ground-breaking
treatment he received at the Royal Marsden has given him the chance to survive
and thrive. His care by the department during
and since that period has been second to none.
The triathlon team (of two!) is the result of 35 years of friendship that began when working for the charity, Adventure Unlimited. At the age of 63 Morgan feels that this is probably their greatest adventure together.
Throughout the treatment and recovery, Paul was there whenever Morgan or his family needed him. There were so many issues, unrelated to the actual illness, that Paul was willing to help resolve.
Part of the reason that Morgan and Paul have taken on the triathlon challenge is to offer hope to other patients, perhaps early in their treatment, that there can be a light at the end of the tunnel.
It is also a great way to celebrate family and friendship and to thank those who put their hearts and souls into researching, treating and supporting patients with cancer.
So here we are, training three times a week, come rain, wind or shine, with one week to go. We’ve had one bike crash, one near drowning, two pulled calf muscles and countless fits of the giggles squeezing into and out of inappropriately (for our age) figure hugging items of sportswear.
Please spur us and help us help the wonderful Oracle charity.
