On Friday 11th May, I will be letting a student cut off my hair. It is in memory of a remarkable boy who sadly lost his battle with Leukaemia, thirty years ago, at the age of ten, on 26th April 1988. My hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children who have lost their hair through medical treatment or illness.

Mark Stell was a very close friend to me and my brother. Despite long stays in hospital; debilitating medical treatment, that often meant he had to stay indoors or prevented him from going in the houses of his friends, when he came home - and the inevitable loss of his hair - Mark always remained positive.

When he was fit enough, Mark constantly  put his energy into fundraising and encouraged an army of children to do a whole range of sponsored events: we washed cars; collected bags and bags of tin cans and ring pulls, which we sold to scrap metal dealers and some of us even did a sponsored finger-knit (if we could do it, we asked people to sponsor us to do it).

Throughout my life, Mark has been a positive influence. His courage, determination and proactive outlook - focusing, not on his situation but what he could do - have made me a better person. When I have had to do something difficult, I remember how Mark faced his challenges. When something unpleasant has happened, I am reminded that it is a privilege to be here to face it.

Mark may have gone from us thirty years ago but his legacy remains. Please donate to the memory of this marvellous boy and to help others who find themselves in their own battles with Leukaemia.
