In countries like Ethiopia, when sight is restored, it means so much. Not just to an individual, but also to their family, the local economy and the cycle of poverty. The remedy is straightforward – a pair of glasses, a 20-minute eye surgery, a dose of antibiotics to treat infection. These things alone can restore sight.

That is why, this February, I am taking on the challenge to walk 10,000 steps every day, with the hope to raise funds for Orbis. 

I am lucky enough to have travelled to Ethiopia with Orbis and I have seen first-hand the work they do to save the sight of thousands of people at risk of blindness. In fact, I witnessed the 20 minute surgery that saved the sight of Amina (see images below). 

It costs approximately £10 for Orbis to conduct a sight-saving surgery with the required PPE in Ethiopia. Due to COVID-19, the essential eye care Orbis provides is needed more than ever to ensure that the sight of many people, at immediate risk of blindness, is saved.
