Story
I work for the charity Befrienders For Disability, and I
also believe passionately in the great work they do!
On 26th September, I will be heading out to Nyeri, Kenya, as
part of a group of 16 people visiting and helping at the Metropolitan Sanctuary
for Sick Children there. The Sanctuary has been open since 2007, and it
provides free healthcare and physical/occupational therapy for children with
disabilities. Last year, we treated over 8,000 children in the area, free of
charge; this is a real lifeline for those with next to nothing. Our work is
hugely valuable in the area, and in the ten years we have been operating in
Kenya it has really flourished.
While we are there, we will be visiting sick and disabled
children in their homes, caring for them and providing them with medicines,
food, and treats. We'll be there for 8 days, and in that time we will also distribute food, aid and blankets to a community of displaced people in the Nyeri region, who are currently trying to survive in critically poor conditions.
I feel that the amazing work of the clinic itself is reason
enough to ask for your donations, so this is essentially a request for your charitable giving. However, I've also decided to (learn how
to) make loom band bracelets to give out to the children in the Nyeri clinic. I'll
take out the materials to teach them how to make their own bracelets too.
It's just a tiny gesture to brighten up their day and allow them
to be kids for a while despite their rough circumstances. My fingers may also fall off with
all the looming, if that's any incentive for your donations!
If you could give anything (no matter how small), it would be SO appreciated. Your money will make a real difference to the disabled children of Nyeri, and you are assured of it all going directly to the clinic you see featured in the photos, and on our website: http://www.thebefrienders.org/kenya/#services
(Check out the section on the ACE support chairs -- amazing!)
The more donations we receive, the more people we can help. We all will be hugely grateful.
I'll write an update on our experiences once we get back, so you can see your pounds in action!
