Story
Nat
Most people finish their first marathon and for hours can be heard muttering, “Never again …”
Nat was in the minority – after finishing last year’s London Marathon she was absolutely buzzing and within minutes was talking about which one she would do next.
Having failed to earn a place in the ballot for this year’s London Marathon Nat entered the draw for a running club place. You can guess the rest.
Her training motto has been: “To Buckingham Palace and beyond!”
Andy
I enjoy running.
However, I do not enjoy the pain of running marathons.
I lack the literary ability to adequately describe the slow, mental, torturous process as initially your quads start to grumble from the constant pounding. Often, there is another 10 miles to go, another 16,000 steps for the legs to absorb.
The mind keeps willing the body forward. Onward.
The pain grows and spreads. You start to feel every conceivable niggle. The ability to concentrate wanes. Feet feel like lead and legs turn to jelly. The road stretches out ahead of you, never ending.
Yet the mind keeps willing the body forward.
Running a marathon is an endurance race. Endure just about sums it up.
Here I am again. I know what to expect. The pain will be self-inflicted. I hope my suffering will encourage you to contribute and relieve the suffering of others.
For many of the people who will benefit from our efforts, every day is like a marathon.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank so many of for your fantastic support over the years. Unfortunately, the need for the charity and the help it provides has not gone away. What has “gone away” is much of the funding with budget cuts, economic difficulties, etc. which only increases the need for everybody to consider how they might be able to help.
