Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for the Deloitte Ride Across Britain 2015.
On 5 September 2015 I will set off on my trusty bike from Land's End on a journey lasting 9 days, covering 966 miles and involving over 49,000 feet of climbing. (That is around 13 times up Alpe d'Huez or almost twice the height of Everest, and I'm not built for hills...)
Like many, I am fortunate to have two very happy and healthy young children, but others have a very different experience. I am therefore raising much-needed funds for, and awareness of, a wonderful charity called Over The Wall, which provides free activity camps across the UK for children living with serious and life-limiting illness. The charity also runs Sibling Camps for children who have a brother or sister currently receiving treatment or experiencing the challenges of a serious illness, providing them with a period of fun, enjoyment and activities built around them, as well as Family Camps where the immediate and extended family can change their environment and their experience for a short but valuable period of time.
Please take a look at www.otw.org.uk to find out more about Over The Wall and the work they do (including how to volunteer at one of their many camps!).
I have funded my own participation in the event so every single penny donated will go to the charity. My initial target of £1500 represents the cost of sending just one seriously ill child to a week-long camp. But I don't intend to stop there. The incremental benefit of each and every donation you make, no matter how small, is huge and the more you can donate, the more children and families stand to benefit.
To give you an idea of the difference you can make:
- £5 will pay for a seriously ill child to enjoy a range of creative arts and crafts activities
- £10 will pay for a seriously ill child to experience the climbing wall or to go swimming daily
- £15 will pay for refreshments for the volunteer doctors and nurses
- £20 will pay for a seriously ill child to go horse riding
- £25 will provide a Discovery Box for one of the campers, designed to create an exciting and tangible way for the children to record the adventures of their stay
- £50 will provide food and accommodation for a child for two days at camp
- £120 will train a volunteer
- £400 will pay for one family member to attend a weekend at Family Camp
- £1,000 will pay for the sibling of a seriously ill child to attend a week-long Sibling Camp
So we're all agreed it's a good cause, right? Please give generously and make it all worthwhile!
Now... where's that chamois cream and my lycra?
